
GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an all India level entrance exam. It is conducted by one of the IITs every time. The exam provides admission to postgraduate courses both Masters and Doctoral with MHRD. It is also considered for other government scholarships, assistantships in engineering, technology, architecture, and science.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Eligibility
The candidates should have completed a bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/Technology)
A bachelor’s degree holders of a four-year program in Science (B.S.) OR
A bachelor’s degree in Architecture (Five years course) OR
A five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five-year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree OR
A five-year Integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology OR
A four-year Integrated Master’s degree (Post B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology OR
A master’s degree in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent OR
GATE Exam Syllabus
The GATE exam will comprise questions from the following subjects:
Engineering: The question will be from the relevant subject of the trade.
General Aptitude (GA) component common in all papers
Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning.

GATE Exam Pattern
The GATE exam consists of 65 questions in total with 100 marks. The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
There will two types of questions in the GATE exam:
A – MCQs will carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.
B – Numerical questions will carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.
Imp: There is negative marking (1/3rd) for each wrong response.
GATE Exam Dates
The exam is normally conducted in the month of February.
How to apply for the GATE Exam?
Students should apply for GATE only through online mode. They should visit the official website i.e. http://gate.iitm.ac.in/ and follow the instructions given there carefully.
GATE Exam Fees
The GATE exam fees are as follows:
- For General Category and OBC – Rs.1500/-
- For women and SC/ST/PD candidates – Rs.750/-
- For international candidates – US$ 100
